Hey everyone! We wanted to throw out a quick THANK YOU to everyone who came out in support of Flip Cup on January 25th.

What a great time!! Eleven teams took the challenge and stepped up to the table. With names like McLoven, B.A.M.F, The Hoochie Mamas and Papas, Bitch Face, there certainly wasn’t a lack in name creativity!! In the end it was up to McLovin and Bitch Face to duke it out for first and second place. With Bitch Face leaving with the gold.

A great big “thank you” to Mel and the Tea Sports Page Crew. They always throw a great party. Be on the look out for some esthetic changes at the Page. (We’ve asked for them to put in some stadium seating and maybe a permanent flip cup table…but I think Mel’s got some better ideas!!)

Also, if ANYONE is interested in traveling to Baltimore for the World Series of Flip cup we’d LOVE to talk with you and see how we can help support you. I’ve been in contact with the Baltimore organization and they’d LOVE to have a team representing SD.

The next tourney is February 29th. So mark your calendars and start getting a team or two or three together.

Remember, if your team brings a new team, you get $10 off on your entry fee.

Hope your summer is going great.

We wanted to send out an e-mail to let you all know that we're taking the month of July off from doing a tournament. Now before any rumors start flying or anyone jumps to conclusions...we WILL be back bigger and badder then ever at the end of August...in fact mark your calendars now for Friday Aug 24th, at the Tea Sports Page. That's when and where the next flip cup challenge will be. (Notice it’s one week earlier then we usually do it!!)

In the mean time, I'm sure Mel and everyone else at The Sports Page would love to see your smiling faces in Tea. They've got some great deals, awesome food, fun entertainment...and I bet you could even do some "pick-up flip cup" games between tables!

Flip cup is headed to the great outdoors with the next tournament.

Where: Tea Sports Page, around the volleyball courts to the East.
When: Friday, June 29th 8:30 signup, 9:00 flipoff.

We’ll move things inside if the weather is not cooperative. We did the outdoor thing at the Canaries tournament and found it to be fun and challenging to take on the elements. (wind)

The Tea Sports Page and Upper Midwest Flip Cup is sweetening the first place prizes April 27th.

Teams will be playing for a night in the Birdbath area at Canaries Stadium. (That’s the hot tub area!)

Word on the street is that the Canaries are sending an official Canaries team to play flip cup. See how you do against “The Boys of Summer”….(and a couple random girls.)

ALSO…mark your calendars for May 10th. It’s opening day for the Canaries…and they’ve invited us to do a Flip Cup tourney!!!

That’s right…flip cup and baseball. To get into that tournament all you’ll need is a ticket to the game…the prize for 1st place?? A night in the Canaries Rooftop Suite….The best seats in the house!!!

Golden Ringers

Seventeen teams battled at the Tea Sports Page and the Ringers took home gold once again. Bracket winners and winners of three-straight tournaments, Sip-N-Flip took silver.

The underdog Ringers took the three match championship round losing the first match and taking six straight rounds to win the final two matches.

Special thanks to Cal, Muzzy, Monica, and Jackie for helping out while one of the J's, JOY, was out of commission with a broken ankle.

In an effort to help raise funds for the Sioux Falls Derby Dollz, Upper Midwest Flipcup is holding a special charity tournament at The Sports Page, in Tea, SD, Friday, January 19th..

This will be a regular price tournament at $25 per team with proceeds going to the Derby Dollz. Our beer sponsor for the night is Pabst and we thank them as well as The Sports Page for their help in bringing this tournament together.

But wait, there’s more! The Derby Dollz will have their spank booth in the house. For $5, you too can get your ass paddled by the Derby Dollz and you get to keep a photo! I promise that more than your pride will be bruised!

When: Friday, January 19th 8:30 registration, 9:00 Flipoff (SHARP!)
Where: Sports Page, Tea, SD
Who: You, and four to five of your closest flip cuppers.
Why: To raise money for the Derby Dollz and win golden derby cups.

P.S. We only have room for the first 30 teams who register and have a full team of 5 with at least two females ready to play. On non-charity nights we’re going to limit it to the first 20 teams that register and have all members ready to play. We’ll be back to non-charity play in February.

Sip-N-Flip Repeats

Sip-n-flip makes it two straight as they bested a field of 17 teams at The Sports Page in Tea.

We want to thank The Sports Page for their awesome hospitality and all the help they provide for tournaments, and this month was no exception.

Seventeen teams is the most we have had at a tournament since our Katrina fundraiser last year. A tournament that big is a big challenge to run and we will have some amended rules to announce before the next tournament in January.

If you don't have a team: Don't worry! We'll put one together for you. You'll get to meet new people, play a fun game and drink some beer along the way. Tidbits: If you didn't make it to our last match in Tea, you definitely missed out. Melissa and her crew put on one hell of a time. The music was pumping, people were dancing, and many cups were flying. A great time was had by one and all.

Ringers Take Gold!

On a crisp night at a new venue for Upper Midwest Flipcup, the Ringers took home the coveted golden cups. Eleven teams squared off at the Sports Page for our first tournament there. I talked to a lot of teams after this one and everyone seemed to LOVE the new venue. I have personally never had more fun at a tournament. Special thanks to Melissa and the entire Sports Page staff who took great care of us and even provided prizes for the winners. We also had several very responsible players take advantage of the transport provided by Sports Page. I’m very pleased with you for making that choice and even more impressed that this great bar offers the service.

Even better news: As happy as we were with the Sports Page, they were just as happy with all of you. We will be back on October 27 for another Friday night contest. I hope to see all of you, and more there.

What we will work on for next month: I had been inviting a group of people (Nagging them, really) for some time to come to a tournament. They showed up with half of a team and I just put them together with some other guys. I had no idea they would be that good and they had me sweating bullets at the prospect of having an all-guy team win. Fortunately my team was able to eliminate them. Next month, no all-males teams no matter what.

Also, I can’t really point to why we took an extra hour and a half to get the tournament done. If we have more than 10 teams will run a two-table tournament. Our goal will be to be done by midnight so our winners have some time to properly celebrate.

I hear the Sports Page is organizing some first-time home teams to try to take us travelers down. Let's do our best to welcome them to organized beer sports!

What's On Tap?

We get asked all the time: “When do we play flipcup again?”

Soon.

The summer hiatus may be coming to an end. Details are rough, but we are tentatively planning our first OUTDOOR flipcup tournament. We’re working on a firm date but it looks like we will kick off the second half of the ’06 season in late August at Netbinders.

Netbinders is a Sioux Falls’ premier sand volleyball venue. We look to have a tent in case of bad weather, and some water buckets to keep your cup from getting too crunchy.

We are also in talks with an exciting new location, and hope to continue events at a couple of our old haunts. We may be able to kick off a tour of 3-4 bars from September through early December.

We’re hoping for more teams, get the word out and be prepared for a couple of tweaks to the rules as we head into a great fall season of flippin’.

Nine teams battled it out for Flip Cup supremacy at The Nickel Spot. Sip&Flip came roaring out of the loser’s bracket to take down the Peanut Pickers and take home the golden cups.

As you can see, it can be worth a lot of points to come out of the loser’s bracket. You play more. It’s also very important to win some rounds in your games. Losing 3-0 does nothing for your point total. Teams that took it to 3-2 and lost still did OK in points.

We will use these points to seed the next tournament. Since it is a double elimination tournament, the #1 seed will play #2, #3 will play #4 and so on. Any new teams will play as the lowest seeds. It's tougher for the top teams, but if you really are good, it won't matter.

Forget that mularky I mentioned earlier about March 24th. That's out.

But some exciting news! The Nickel Spot wants us back, and they got us!

Where: The Nickel Spot
When: Friday, March 31st, 8:30 PM signup, 9:00 PM Flipoff.
Who: You, your team of five and your designated driver.

Budweiser will be on hand with prizes and as always, teams will be squaring off to win the golden cups.

Additionally, this is the first of three tournaments in our Spring Championship Series. We will be keeping points from the tournament, posting them on this site for bragging rights and awarding one lucky and talented team as season champions. If you want to taste beer out of the giant golden cup, make sure your team is at each tournament, and make sure you bring other teams to get the point counts up.

We're working on a location for April and we'll crown season champions by getting back to our roots at Suds-n-Suds in May.

First off, have a happy St. Patrick's Day!

We have another tournament date! Mark your calendars for March 24th. I can’t say where it is yet, but it is a new location that we have not hoisted plastic at yet. This promises to be fun and we hope for great turnout. More details to come. Hopefully I can say officially Monday.

Additionally, we are tentatively planning two more tournaments after that. Sounds great? Well, sounds better if we make a season points championship out of it! Location number two should be at an old familiar home to flip cup, sort of a homecoming. And we hope to book the third tournament soon.

So get this, three tournaments planned, and something about points? How does that work, you might ask?

At each tournament we are able to keep points based on wins in each match. It takes 3 to win but you could score up to 2 in a losing effort. We can tally those points from each round and keep a tournament and season total. The more teams show up, the more rounds a tournament takes, and the more rounds it takes, the more points your team could earn with a tournament win. I’d say it’s a good idea to invite everyone you can!

We’ll keep a running points total on this site. Man, you think people brag now, wait until there is a points listing to squawk over.

Five teams battled for the coveted golden cups and the Ringers walked away with them once again.

(A little inside information: Apparently the Ringers swaggered in with the kind of bravado and intestinal fortitude rarely seen in any sport. Two members of that team had the "guts" to write their names on the bottom of the trophies before the tourney even started. Did they, "know", or were they just that confident? Only they know. At any rate, the trophies will be under better watch in the future.)

We're still on for Friday night, but...

Due to circumstances beyond our control the location of flip cup has changed. We will hold the flip cup tournament at Joy and Muzzy's house.

When: Friday, February 24. 8:30 registration, 9:00 Flipoff.

How much: $5 per person or $25 per team.

Get your teams together and get your fingers limber. We're starting off a new spring season of Flip Cup!

Where: The Nickle Spot.

When: Friday, February 24. 8:30 registration, 9:00 Flipoff.

How much: $5 per person or $25 per team.

Prizes: As always, Budweiser prizes for the winning teams, the coveted trophies, and bragging rights.

We're hoping to set up a whole spring tour with three-four events and a points system. We'll try to get a schedule out soon and give more details on that idea.

Just seeing if anyone notices...

Sorry for the lack of pictures from the last tourney. My home computer took a dump. Once I got that going again, I lost my login for the site.

So, I will get those photos on soon and we'll have some exciting announcements about future tournaments. Look for more information around Super Bowl time.

Another successful tournament has come and gone and everyone on hand had a blast!

Seven teams squared off at The Nickel Spot to earn the golden cups and the awesome Budweiser prizes that we thank Beal Distributing for providing.

With Hobo days looming, some interesting teams took shape. A patchwork Ballzonya took the gold cups from a Kaiser Soze team made up of the captains of the Ringers and Skin2Win with three rookies. A team with only four members was allowed to play as one of the players offered to take the role of two. He performed admirably and I think that team took two wins.

The night was not without controversy, however. The Bud Girls, in their second strong effort at a sanctioned event, left the tournament after only one loss. This gave Kaiser Soze a clear path out of the loser’s bracket into the finals. Kaiser Soze took game one from Ballzonya, squaring the tournament. Ballzonya was not to be denied, as they took the final round 3-2 in a thrilling and close final match.

We’re thinking about waiting a month and a half for the next tournament. This time of year is busy and we want to have big crowds on hand. Let us know in the comments section below or email us with input or ideas for the next round. 2006 may also feature a points championship. Stay tuned for more news on that.

Upper Midwest Flip Cup has some exciting upcoming announcements. If you'd like to get an email each time we plan an event, send us an email at flipcuppers@gmail.com

We've been asked about doing another tournament and we think we can get back to a regular event on October 21st. We're working on details on the location. We're hoping for 10-12 teams and a fairly managable number of people.

This will not be a charity tournament, and we'll be back to $5 per person or $25 a team. As always, the golden cups will be up for grabs and we're hoping for fabulous Budweiser prizes again.

Some of us have been playing in "non-sanctioned" Flip Cup events at gatherings around Sioux Falls. It's really impressive how this game gets people excited, builds teamwork and friendships. Flip Cup is the talk of the town and we hope to keep spreading the word. When someone asks you about Flip Cup, please send them to this site.

Flip Off Katrina A Huge Success!

We did it! Eighteen teams came forward and donated $845 for hurricane relief and had a blast doing it. Special thanks to The Nickel Spot, KRRO radio for all their on-air promotion, and to Beal Distributing for the amazing prizes, promotion, and so much behind-the-scenes work. Also special thanks to the Jaycees for providing two officials for the tournament. They were a great help.

The New England Patriots have nothing on a team named Major League Flip Cup. These guys have played flip cup three times under our sanction, and have taken home the coveted gold cups every time. To emphasize their dominance, they played out of the losers bracket and had to win two matches in the semifinals, and did it again to defeat the Peanut Pickers twice to claim the crown.

It was a fun night and went about as well as could be expected in an event that had over 90 contestants and many spectators. The Nickel Spot staff worked their tails off and were a great help. Hats off to them, and I hope they were tipped well.

The Flip Off Katrina Fundraiser is a go.

Who: You, four friends, and a designated driver
What: Flip Cup, the world’s greatest drinking relay game
Where: The Nickel Spot, 2918 S Minnesota Ave Sioux Falls
When: Saturday, September 17, 9:00 PM registration, 9:30 PM Flip-off.
How much: Just $10 per person or $50 per team, all proceeds will go to the Sioux Empire Red Cross
Special trophies and Budweiser prizes will be awarded to the winning teams

We’re hoping for 20 teams for this event and hope to raise $1,000. We will have to cap the tournament at 20 teams. The first 20 teams to register will play.

It’s not required, but if you would like to “pre-register” using the comments section below, it can help us organize the event and keep the tournament and the beer running smoothly.

Upper Midwest Flip Cup is planning a second fundraising effort. This time, we’ll have a flip-a-thon to raise funds for hurricane relief.

Tentatively:

Saturday, September 17.

Location TBA (We're going to need a big one, hoping for 16-20 teams)

$10 per person, with all proceeds going to hurricane relief

Special Trophies for this event, and we hope to have prizes donated from the great folks at Budweiser once again.

We’re doubling the entry fee, but we feel it’s a worthwhile cause. We’ll be putting the funds toward either the Red Cross, or America’s Second Harvest.

How Do I Play?

Rules and Terms:
Flip Cup is a team game, usually with 5 players per team. You may also have one alternate. Each team has to have a minimum of two females.
At the beginning of each round each team will be given a full cup of beer to be distributed between players as they see fit.

The game is basically a relay race. Each person on the team goes one at a time. The first person must drink their beer. Once finished, they must place the empty cup, right-side up, on the end of the table. They then must flip the cup over so that it lands face-down on the table. (You sort of just tap the bottom of the right-side up cup to make it flip).The next person may then proceed to drink and flip until the entire team is done.The first team to finish and flip all of their cups wins!

Game: One round of Flip-Cup. Winning team finishes five cups first.

Match: A match will consist of a best of five series between two teams. Winning team wins three games.

Please name your team for the bracket. Team shirts are not required but are encouraged.
Teams will elect a team captain. The team captain will be responsible for Flip-Offs.
Flip-Off: First round byes will be determined by Flip-Off.

Game Play:
Next player in line may not hold their cup until the previous player has successfully flipped theirs. The cup must remain on the table until a successful flip is made.

Lost cups: The flipping player must flip their own cup. Wild cups on the floor must be chased and used to advance.

Booting: If a team member should boot (puke, yak, Technicolor yawn, pray to the porcelain god), he or she is eliminated from the tournament. The alternate must take their place. The loss of two team members in this fashion will result in disqualification.

We highly recommend you designate a driver outside of your team for your safe transport home. A typical alternate could play one round and be fine to drive. We want you to have a great time and be safe
